We clean them by hand with a smaller tool, working into the nosing and the riser so the clean looks even from the bottom step to the top. Carpet steam cleaned is normally dry in one to three hours. On stairs, keep traffic to a minimum until then, and wear clean socks rather than shoes if you have to go up.
