Newer homes, carpet upstairs

Williams Landing is one of the newer suburbs in the City of Wyndham, planned around its own station and town centre, and most of its homes have been built in the last fifteen years or so. Typical houses are double-storey family homes and townhouses with hard flooring downstairs and carpet on the stairs, the upstairs hallway, the bedrooms and sometimes a rumpus or theatre room.

Carpet in homes of this age is usually a nylon or polyester. These fibres are tough and colourfast, and they respond well to steam cleaning, but they have one weakness: they hold onto oily soil. Over time, that oil attracts dust and the traffic areas go dull and grey even though the carpet itself is in good shape. Regular hot water extraction rinses that film out and stops it building up.

Why the stairs wear first

On a staircase, every step lands on the same few centimetres of carpet, and every turn twists the fibres. Grit from shoes and paws settles on the front edge of each tread and grinds the pile flat. That is why stairs look worn long before the bedrooms do.

We clean stairs tread by tread with a hand tool, working the edges along the wall and balustrade where dust collects. Between cleans, a stiff brush on the nosings and a slow vacuum once a week does a lot to slow the wear. Shoes off at the front door helps even more.

Rumpus and theatre rooms upstairs are another hot spot: popcorn, drinks and kids lying on the floor. Food and drink stains are easier to lift when they are fresh, so blot them with a dry towel straight away and avoid rubbing.
