What builds up in a mattress over the years

An adult loses a surprising amount of moisture and skin overnight, and over months it soaks into the comfort layers. That brings yellow patches where people lie, a stale smell that a sheet change does not fix, and a steady supply of food for dust mites. Children’s beds add spilt drinks and the occasional accident, and a pet on the bed adds hair, dander and odour.

Old houses, new townhouses, and all sorts of beds

Do not pour water, bleach or vinegar on it, because that spreads the stain and drives it into the foam.

Rotate the mattress every few months so it wears evenly, and air it with the sheets off on a dry, sunny morning when you can.
