Big houses, and newer apartment living

Why mattresses get dirty without looking it

A mattress can look fine and still be carrying a heavy load. Each night we lose moisture through sweat and shed skin flakes, and over the years that builds up in the top comfort layers. Dust mites feed on those flakes, and their droppings trigger allergies and asthma in some people. Spring pollen from Manningham’s leafy streets and gardens adds to it.

Low-moisture or hot water extraction

• Firm innerspring mattresses with a tightly woven cover and heavy sweat marks: hot water extraction, which rinses deeper.

• Every mattress: dry and usable by the same evening. Leave the bed unmade until then.

Keeping it fresh afterwards

Put a breathable waterproof protector on once the mattress is dry, and wash it every couple of weeks. Rotate the mattress head to foot every three months. Vacuum it when you change the sheets, using the upholstery tool. Keep pets off the bed if anyone in the house has allergies.

If someone in the house is allergic to dust mites, wash bedding weekly in hot water, keep soft toys off the bed or wash them often, and keep the bedroom well ventilated. Book a mattress clean at least once a year, or every six months for allergy sufferers.
