Looking after mattresses between cleans

A fitted waterproof protector is the single best thing you can buy for a child’s bed. Wash it every week or two with the sheets. Vacuum the mattress every few months with the upholstery tool, rotate it head to foot, and let it air with the bedding pulled back for an hour on a dry morning.
