A typical lounge suite takes an hour or two, and you can stay in another room or get on with your day. We bring the equipment and need only a power point and a tap nearby. Pieces are moved out from the wall so the backs and sides are cleaned as thoroughly as the seats.
A leafy suburb leaves its mark indoors
Blackburn is known for its tall trees and bushy gardens, with Blackburn Lake Sanctuary at its heart. That greenery is the reason many people live here, and it also means pollen, fine plant matter and garden dust find their way inside every spring. A fabric couch acts like a filter, collecting all of it in the weave.
If anyone in the house has hay fever or allergies, that build-up can be noticeable. Thorough cleaning removes dust, pollen and allergen residue from the fabric surface and the top of the padding. Our guide on whether dry cleaning removes allergens explains how the two methods compare.
Pets add their share. Dogs and cats bring in garden material on their coats, leave hair worked deep into the weave, and often have a favourite end of the couch that slowly takes on a smell. Deodorising is included, and pet urine treatment is available when an accident has reached the foam underneath.
Mid-century homes and good furniture
Many Blackburn homes date from the 1950s to the 1970s, and some households have kept furniture of the same era or bought it back: Scandinavian-style armchairs, wool-upholstered lounges and solid timber dining chairs with fabric seats. Those pieces are often worth cleaning carefully rather than replacing.
Wool and wool blends clean well but need the right temperature and a wool-safe solution. Older cotton and linen covers can shrink, so they get very little moisture. Exposed timber frames are protected while we work. If a piece has loose seams or fragile fabric, we will point it out before starting.
- Wool upholstery: controlled temperature and a gentle rinse
- Cotton and linen: low-moisture cleaning to avoid shrinkage
- Velvet: brushed as it dries so the pile sits evenly
- Modern microfibre: usually a full steam clean
Drying and day-to-day care
Fabric is generally dry within four to six hours. Keep the room aired, and leave cushions where the technician placed them until they are fully dry. After that, vacuum the couch with a soft brush every week or two in spring to stop pollen building up again, and turn reversible cushions now and then so they wear evenly.
Between cleans, deal with spills by blotting with a white cloth and cold water rather than scrubbing, which can spread a mark and rough up the fibres. Keep good furniture out of strong afternoon sun where possible, and use a throw on the most popular seat. A once-a-year clean suits most family lounges.
Questions from Blackburn customers
Can you clean a leather lounge too?
Yes. Leather is cleaned and conditioned rather than steam cleaned. See our leather lounge cleaning page for the process.
Do you clean carpet and rugs in Blackburn as well?
Yes. We clean carpet throughout our eastern suburbs area, plus rugs and mattresses. Add them to your quote and it is all one fixed price.
Is the cleaning safe with a dog or cat in the house?
Yes. We use products suited to family homes and rinse thoroughly. Keep pets off the fabric until it is dry. Our article on whether carpet cleaners are pet safe has more detail.
How long until we can sit on the couch again?
Plan on four to six hours for fabric upholstery to dry, a little longer on a cold, still day. Good airflow helps a lot, so open a window or use a fan.
