Is steam cleaning safe for my couch?

It depends on the fabric, which is why we test first. Most modern couches are polyester, nylon, olefin or a blend, and they handle hot water extraction well. It is the most thorough way to remove body oils, sweat and food from the cushion foam. Natural fibres such as linen, cotton and viscose are more sensitive to water and are cleaned with less moisture or by a dry method so they do not shrink or brown.

Look under the seat cushions for a care code. W means water-based cleaning is fine, S means solvent only, W/S means either, and X means vacuum only. If there is no tag, the test patch tells us what we need to know. Leather is cleaned and conditioned with leather products, never steam.

A note on sofa beds and spare rooms

Sofa beds pull double duty: a couch most of the year, then a bed for visiting family. The mattress section folds away with whatever was on it, and the seat cushions take the weight of guests sitting up to read. We can clean both the seating fabric and the fold-out mattress. Drying and the first week after

Upholstery is dry in four to six hours, depending on the fabric, the weather and airflow. Open a window or run a fan and it is quicker. Keep pets off until it is fully dry, and stand loose cushions on their edges.

For the first week, notice any mark that seems to come back as the fabric dries. Occasionally a deep stain wicks up from the foam. Call us and we will look at it.
