Period rooms and furniture chosen to last

Canterbury is known for its Victorian, Edwardian and interwar houses on leafy streets, many of them carefully restored and extended. Furniture in homes like these is often chosen to suit the architecture and to last: a deep-buttoned armchair, a velvet sofa in the front sitting room, a linen slipcovered lounge in the new family room at the back.

These are pieces where getting the method wrong would be expensive. So we do not apply one routine to every couch in the house. Each piece is assessed on its own fabric, construction and condition, and we explain what we plan to do before we start.

Front sitting rooms in period homes often get strong morning or afternoon light through large windows. Over the years that fades fabric on the side facing the glass. Cleaning cannot put the colour back, but it does remove the grey film that makes fading look worse, and a sheer curtain or blind slows it down from then on. Turning reversible cushions and moving a chair a little every so often spreads the wear.

How different fabrics are handled

Leather is a separate process again, cleaned and conditioned rather than washed. See our leather lounge cleaning page.

  • Velvet and velour: low moisture, with the pile brushed in one direction as it dries so it does not crush or mark.
  • Linen and cotton: usually low moisture, to avoid shrinkage and the brown rings natural fibres can get when overwetted.
  • Wool and wool blends: wool-safe solutions, moderate temperatures and controlled moisture.
  • Silk, viscose and delicate blends: tested very carefully; some should only be spot treated, and we will tell you if a piece should go to a specialist.
  • Synthetic and performance fabrics: hot water extraction for the deepest clean.

Leaf season and the family room

Big gardens and established trees bring leaf litter, pollen and garden soil indoors, especially in autumn and spring. In the family room that ends up in the weave of the couch along with crumbs, pet hair and body oil. A weekly vacuum with a soft upholstery brush and turning the cushions regularly slow the build-up a great deal.

For the stains that do happen, blot with a white cloth and cold water and do not rub. Our sofa stain removal guide goes through the common ones.

Rugs, mattresses and drying

Many Canterbury homes have polished floors with a good rug in front of the sofa. Rugs can be cleaned on site or, for hand-knotted and delicate pieces, washed off site; our rug cleaning page explains how we decide. Mattresses can be added too and are dry and usable by the same evening.

Upholstery needs four to six hours before use. Large period rooms can stay cool, so open a window on a dry day or run the heating gently, and keep pets off until everything is dry.

Questions from Canterbury customers

Do you also clean couches in Kew East, Surrey Hills and Ashburton?

Yes. We work throughout Boroondara and the surrounding suburbs as part of our eastern suburbs work, with no travel charge anywhere in metropolitan Melbourne.

Can you clean an antique or deep-buttoned chair?

Often, yes, with a gentle low-moisture clean. Older fabric, horsehair stuffing and hand stitching can be fragile, so we look at the piece first and are honest about what is realistic.

Can you also clean tiles and grout while you are here?

Yes. Kitchen, bathroom and outdoor tiles can be added to the same visit. See our tile and grout cleaning page.
