Open-plan living and the big modular
Caroline Springs is a planned community in the City of Melton, built mostly from the late 1990s onwards, and many homes have open-plan living with a large modular or corner sofa as the centrepiece. That sofa does a lot. It is the TV couch, the homework spot, the place visitors sit and where the kids build forts out of the cushions.
Modulars have more seams, more piping and more separate pieces than a standard three-seater, and they often come in pale greys and oatmeal tones that show every mark. We clean each piece completely, including the sides that butt up against each other, so the colour stays even when you rearrange them later.
Recliners are the other favourite in family homes, and they need care of their own. The footrest and headrest pick up most of the grime, crumbs collect around the mechanism, and power recliners have motors and wiring underneath. We clean the fabric with tight control over moisture and keep it well away from the working parts.
The marks family couches collect
Most of these respond well to the right pre-treatment and a thorough extraction. Ink and dye-based marks can be stubborn, and we will tell you what to expect before starting.
- A darker band along the front edge of the seats, from legs, hands and school uniforms.
- Grey patches on the arms and headrests, mostly body oil and hair product.
- Food and drink spills: juice, milk, chocolate, takeaway sauce.
- Pen, texta and crayon from the youngest artists in the house.
- Pet hair, muddy paw prints and the occasional accident.
Steam or low-moisture for fabric
Durable synthetics, microfibre and performance fabrics usually get hot water extraction, which flushes out oils and fine dust from the fabric and the top of the foam. Natural fibres like cotton and linen, and anything with a solvent-only care code, get a low-moisture clean that protects the fabric from shrinking or water marks.
Upholstery is usually dry in four to six hours after a steam clean. Open the windows or run a fan to help, and keep children and pets off until the fabric feels dry right through. Our article on whether steam cleaning is child safe answers the common questions parents ask.
Keeping a light sofa looking good
Vacuum the couch every week with the upholstery tool, including the crevices. Rotate and flip loose cushions so they wear evenly. A washable throw over the most-used seat is far easier to clean than the couch itself. Blot spills straight away with a white cloth and cold water, and resist the urge to rub. If the couch sits in front of a big window, consider closing the blinds on hot afternoons, as strong sun fades fabric quickly.
Before we arrive, take throws, loose cushions and toys off the couch, and clear the floor around it so we can work on all sides. Let us know if any spot has been treated with a home product, because some leave residues that react with cleaning solutions.
Carpet and mattresses can be cleaned on the same visit. See carpet cleaning in Caroline Springs for the floors, and our mattress cleaning page for beds.
Questions from Caroline Springs customers
Do you clean couches in Burnside Heights and nearby areas too?
Yes. We cover the whole of metropolitan Melbourne, including the rest of the western suburbs, with no travel charge.
Can I just wash the removable covers myself?
It is risky. Machine washing can shrink covers so they no longer fit, and washed covers often end up a different shade from the ones you did not wash. Cleaning them on the couch keeps them matched.
Can you remove pet smell from a fabric sofa?
Often, yes. We use an enzyme treatment that breaks down urine rather than covering it. If it has soaked deep into the foam, we will tell you what is realistic before starting.
Do you clean leather couches?
Yes. Leather is cleaned and conditioned rather than wetted. See leather lounge cleaning for details.
