A lounge suite usually takes an hour or two. We bring everything with us and need only a power point and a tap. Furniture is eased away from the wall so the back and sides are cleaned too, and exposed timber legs and frames are protected while we work.

Victorian houses and good furniture

Hawthorn in the City of Boroondara is known for its Victorian and Edwardian houses, many beautifully restored, and for the furniture that goes with them. We often see a mix of family heirlooms and contemporary designer pieces in the same room: a buttoned velvet chaise, a pair of wool club chairs, and a modern linen sofa that looks simple but needs real care.

These pieces deserve more caution than a typical family modular. Antique upholstery may have horsehair or older padding that should never get very wet. Linen and cotton covers can shrink or ripple if over-wetted, and some dyes are not colourfast. We test in a hidden spot and adjust the method, and if a fabric is too fragile to clean safely we will tell you rather than risk it.

Light is another factor in older homes with big front windows. Sun fades silk, velvet and linen, and it can make old stains look darker by contrast. Cleaning lifts soiling but cannot restore faded dye, so we will point out any fading before we begin.

Care tags help. W means water-based cleaning is fine, S means solvent only, WS allows either, and X means vacuum only. Many older pieces have no tag at all, which is why testing matters. This is how we approach the common fabrics:

• Linen and cotton: low-moisture cleaning with careful drying to avoid shrinkage and browning
• Wool: controlled temperature and a wool-safe solution
• Velvet: cleaned gently, with the pile brushed into line as it dries
• Microfibre and synthetic blends: usually a thorough steam clean
• Leather: cleaned and conditioned, a separate process

Apartments, students and busy households

Drying time and gentle upkeep

Fabric upholstery is usually dry in four to six hours. Keep the room aired, keep pets and children off until it feels completely dry, and avoid putting cushions in direct sun.
