Dogs on the lounge
Lilydale has plenty of homes on larger blocks, and with space comes dogs, often big ones. If the dog is allowed on the couch, the fabric collects hair, skin oils, dirt from the yard and a smell that the household stops noticing after a while. Pet hair weaves into textured fabrics like chenille and microfibre and resists even a strong vacuum.
Before cleaning, the technician removes as much hair as possible, then pre-treats the areas where the dog likes to lie. Pet urine is a separate problem: it soaks through the cover into the foam, so we treat the filling, not just the surface. Our guide to pet urine odour removal explains why the smell can return on humid days if only the top layer is cleaned.
When fabric smells musty
Winters on the edge of the hills are cooler and damper than in the inner suburbs. A couch against a cold outside wall, or in a room that is closed up for the season, can pick up a musty smell. It usually comes from moisture and the dust and skin oils that sit in the fabric, not from the couch itself.
Cleaning removes the soil that the smell clings to, and deodorising is included. To stop it coming back, pull the couch a hand’s width away from external walls, open the room up on fine days, and keep the air moving. If you see actual mould spots, mention them when you ask for a quote so we can check before we start.
Drying in a cold house
Fabric upholstery takes four to six hours to dry, and in a cold, still room it will take the longer end of that. Turn the heating on to a comfortable temperature, open a window a little so moist air can escape, and run a fan if you have one. Stand loose seat cushions on their edges. Keep the dog off until everything is completely dry, or the work will be undone quickly.
If a fabric is sensitive to water or you need the couch back sooner, a low-moisture clean is an option. The steam versus dry cleaning guide explains the trade-offs.
Wood heaters are common in homes around the hills. Warm, dry air from a heater actually helps fabric dry, but do not push a damp couch up close to it. Uneven heat can leave water marks on some fabrics, so keep the couch where it normally sits and let the room warm up around it.
Keeping a family couch in good shape
If the carpet is due as well, see carpet cleaning in Lilydale. Both can go on one quote and one visit.
- Put a washable throw where the dog or the kids sit most.
- Vacuum weekly with the upholstery brush, including under the seat cushions.
- Blot spills with a white cloth and cold water; do not rub.
- Flip and rotate cushions so wear is spread evenly.
Questions from Lilydale customers
Can you clean a couch that the dog sleeps on every day?
Yes. We remove as much hair as possible first, then clean and deodorise the fabric. Odour from accidents is treated in the cushion filling. It helps to keep the dog off for the rest of the day while it dries.
Do you clean leather lounges in Lilydale?
Yes. Leather is cleaned and conditioned with leather products, not steam. See leather lounge cleaning.
Can you clean mattresses on the same visit?
Yes. Mattresses are cleaned on the bed and are dry and usable by the same evening. See mattress cleaning for details.
What days do you work?
Monday to Saturday, 7am to 7pm. Quote requests sent during those hours usually get a reply within the hour.
