First the couch is vacuumed thoroughly, including down the sides and under the seat cushions, where most grit and crumbs hide. Stains are pre-treated individually. Then the fabric is cleaned with hot water extraction, which rinses the soil out and lifts it straight back up, or with a low-moisture method for fabrics that do not tolerate water well, such as some linens, viscose blends and older cotton. Pile fabrics like velvet are brushed so they dry evenly.
