Nunawading sits in the City of Whitehorse, and its streets mix original post-war houses with units and newer townhouses on subdivided blocks. That means we see everything from a well-loved lounge suite that has been in the family for decades to a brand-new modular bought for a fresh build. They need quite different handling, which is why nothing gets cleaned before we know what the fabric is.

Is it worth cleaning an older lounge suite?

Often, yes. A solid timber frame and good foam can outlast two or three sets of cushions, and a deep clean is the simplest way to find out how much life is left in the fabric. What a clean can do: lift the grey film that builds up on arms and headrests, remove most food and drink marks, and take away the stale smell that settles into foam over the years. What it cannot do: rebuild worn or split fabric, restore colour that has faded in the sun, or firm up cushions that have gone flat.

If your couch is in that second group, we will say so before we start. Sometimes the honest answer is that a reupholsterer or new cushion inserts will do more for it than any clean.

What we look at before choosing a method

  • The cleaning code on the tag, if there is one. It tells us whether the maker allows water-based cleaning, solvent cleaning, both, or vacuum only.
  • The fibre itself. Polyester, microfibre and many blends handle steam well. Cotton, linen, viscose and velvet often do better with a low-moisture clean.
  • Colour fastness. We test a hidden spot so dyes do not bleed into piping or onto pale cushions.
  • Stains and their history. A coffee ring, a pen mark and a pet accident each need a different pre-treatment, so it helps to tell us what caused them.
  • Timber and metal. Exposed legs and frames are protected so nothing is wetted that should not be.

Drying, and getting the room back

After a steam clean, fabric upholstery is usually dry in four to six hours. Open a window, run a ceiling fan or put the heating on low to help it along. Keep children and pets off until the fabric feels dry right through, and leave dark throws and cushions off until then too, so their colour cannot transfer.

Leather is a different job. It is cleaned and conditioned rather than wetted, and you can read more on our leather lounge cleaning page. If the carpet under the couch is due too, it can go on the same visit; see carpet cleaning in Nunawading.

Small habits that keep fabric cleaner

Vacuum the couch every week or two with the upholstery tool, including down the sides of the cushions where crumbs collect. Flip and rotate loose seat cushions so they wear evenly. Keep the couch out of direct afternoon sun if you can, because UV fades fabric and weakens fibres. For spills, blot with a clean white cloth and a little cold water, working from the outside in, and never rub. Our guide to sofa stain removal covers which marks are worth tackling yourself and which are best left for us.

Questions from Nunawading customers

Do you also clean couches in Donvale and Templestowe Lower?

Yes. We work across the eastern suburbs and the whole of metropolitan Melbourne, with no travel charge. The same fabric testing and fixed quote apply wherever you are.

Is couch cleaning different from upholstery cleaning?

Not really. Upholstery cleaning covers any padded, fabric-covered furniture, and the couch is simply the piece most people book it for. Armchairs, dining chairs, bedheads and ottomans can all be added to the same quote.

Can you clean the mattresses on the same visit?

Yes. Mattresses are cleaned on the bed and are dry and usable by the same evening. See our mattress cleaning page for how it works.

Do I need to move the couch before you arrive?

No. We clean it where it is. Clearing cushions, throws, toys and anything on the floor around it makes the job quicker, and we can pull it out from the wall ourselves if needed.
