Williamstown is one of Melbourne’s older seaside suburbs. Its streets hold Victorian and Edwardian cottages, weatherboard and bluestone homes, and newer townhouses and apartments, many of them close to the water. Rooms in the old cottages are compact, so the couch tends to stay where it is, and cleaning it in place is the only sensible way.
Living by the water: salt, damp and sand
Sea air carries fine salt that settles on everything, fabric included. Salt attracts moisture, so in humid or wet weather a couch near an open window can feel slightly tacky and pick up dirt faster. In winter, older homes close to the bay can also get damp, and that shows up as a musty smell in cushions and mattresses.
A thorough extraction clean rinses out salt and the soil it holds, and deodorising deals with mild mustiness. If there is mould on the fabric, we will look at it first and tell you whether it can be treated; persistent damp needs fixing at the source.
Sand is the other one. It works into the seams and under seat cushions after beach days. Vacuum it out regularly, because grinding sand wears fabric thin.
Short-stay rentals and holiday homes near the water have their own pattern: a lot of different guests, sunscreen and swimmers on the furniture, and long gaps when the house is closed up. A clean between busy periods keeps couches and mattresses fresh for the next guests, and we can work around your changeover days.
Old-house furniture and natural fabrics
Period homes often have period-style furniture: linen-covered sofas, cotton slipcovers, wool armchairs, and the occasional antique that has been reupholstered more than once. Natural fibres need careful moisture control. Too much water can shrink linen, make cotton go stiff, or pull brown marks up from the frame. We test, then choose a low-moisture method where it is safer.
If a piece is old and the fabric fragile, we may recommend a gentle refresh rather than a full deep clean. Better a slight improvement than damaged fabric. For leather pieces, our leather lounge cleaning uses conditioners rather than steam.
Drying times and caring for it afterwards
Upholstery dries in four to six hours. A sea breeze through an open window helps on a dry day, but on a humid one a fan or heating does more. Keep pets and people off until it is dry, and stand loose cushions on their edges.
Afterwards, vacuum fortnightly, rotate cushions, and keep the couch out of strong afternoon sun, which fades fabric. Our sofa stain guide shows which spills you can tackle yourself.
Mattresses, rugs and carpet
Mattresses are cleaned in the bedroom and are dry by the same evening, which is handy if damp weather has left them smelling stale. Rugs can be added to the same visit; see rug cleaning. For the floors, see carpet cleaning in Williamstown, and our work across the area is on the inner west page.
Questions from Williamstown customers
Can you get parking near a Williamstown cottage?
Usually. If your street has permit zones or tight parking, let us know when you book so the technician can plan where to park and how far the hoses will run.
Can you treat a musty smell in a couch?
Mild mustiness from damp weather usually clears with extraction and deodorising. If the smell keeps returning, the room itself may be holding moisture, and that needs fixing alongside the clean.
Do you clean outdoor cushions?
We can often clean fabric outdoor cushions alongside indoor furniture. Mention them when you ask for a quote and tell us what fabric they are if you know.
Is couch cleaning in Williamstown available on Saturdays?
Yes. We work Monday to Saturday, 7am to 7pm. Weekend spots fill first, so ask early.
