Carpet that has been down a while
Karingal is an established part of the City of Frankston, with many brick homes from the post-war decades onwards. Some still have carpet that was laid a long time ago, either an original wool blend or a hard-wearing nylon put in during a renovation. Those carpets are often better quality than they look. Their main problem is depth of soil: grit, skin flakes and spills that have settled into the base of the pile over years of vacuuming that never reached them.
Hot water extraction is usually the right tool here. It flushes the pile from the base and pulls the loosened soil straight out. Steam-cleaned carpet is normally dry in one to three hours with some airflow. For a room you need straight back, a low-moisture carpet dry clean can be walked on immediately.
Wool and wool-blend carpet needs a little extra care. We use wool-safe products, keep the water temperature and moisture under control, and groom the pile so it dries evenly. Nylon is more forgiving and copes well with a thorough hot water clean.
Dogs, cats and the smell that comes back
Backyards and family homes go hand in hand with pets, and pets mean the odd accident on the carpet. The trouble with urine is that it does not stay on the surface. It runs down through the pile into the backing and underlay, dries, and then releases its smell again whenever the room warms up or gets damp. Household sprays mostly mask it for a day or two.
Our pet urine treatment targets the affected spots with an enzyme product that breaks down the source, followed by a thorough extraction. We are honest about the limits: a spot that has been used repeatedly over a long time may have soaked the underlay, and cleaning alone may not remove every trace. Our guide on pet urine odour removal explains why, and are carpet cleaners pet safe answers the other common question.
Signs your carpet is due
- Grey or darker paths through hallways and in front of the couch.
- Dark lines along skirting boards and under doors, where air filters through the carpet edge.
- A musty or animal smell when you first come home.
- Spots that reappear a few days after you clean them yourself, a sign of residue left underneath.
- More sneezing or itchy eyes indoors than outside.
Getting the house ready
Pick up toys, shoes and anything small on the floor, and move breakables off low furniture. Put pets in the yard or a closed room while we work and until the carpet is dry. Show the technician any stain you are concerned about and tell them what caused it. Afterwards, open a window or run the heating on low, and keep shoes off the carpet for the rest of the day.
If you are selling, cleaning before listing photos brightens rooms. If you are a tenant moving out, our end of lease carpet cleaning comes with a receipt for the agent.
Questions from Karingal customers
Can you also clean the couch?
Yes. Add it to your quote request and it goes on one fixed price. Our Karingal couch cleaning page explains how we clean fabric and leather lounges.
Do you repair carpet that the dog has chewed?
No. We clean carpet but do not repair it. Chewed edges, burns, seams and re-stretching are jobs for a carpet layer. If you are having a repair done, book us afterwards.
Do you cover the rest of the Frankston area?
Yes. We clean carpets throughout Frankston and the wider south-east Melbourne area, with no travel charge in the metropolitan area.
How often should a family home carpet be cleaned?
For a busy home with children or pets, once a year is a good rhythm, with extra attention to stains as they happen. Quieter homes can usually go longer between cleans.
